There’s something special about a day on the beach. Somehow the sea air makes memories stronger and the golden sands make everything sweeter.
Sunderland’s twin Blue Flag Award winning beaches are the perfect place to unwind. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to let the kids run off some excess energy or to sit and relax with a picnic; there’s miles of beautiful coastline from which to choose the ideal spot.
Roker and Seaburn beaches have been favourite family spots for hundreds of years. It’s easy to see why when you’re gazing out towards the horizon with just the lighthouse of Roker Pier to punctuate the view. It’s a sandcastle builders paradise.
But every top sandcastle builder needs refreshment, or an ice cream at the very least. That’s where the cafés and restaurants at Pier Point in Roker come in to their own.
Alongside Pier Point work is well underway on a brand new attraction, one that will transform how you view the coastline.
Roker Pier is in the latter stages of a massive restoration. As part of the work, the original tunnel used in construction is being opened to the public for the first time. This new underground tour will help visitors understand the huge skill and effort needed to build such a structure… and allow visitors into the stunning lighthouse for the first time.
If underground isn’t your thing, then look to the skies for Sunderland International Airshow every July. Some of the rarest aircraft and very best air-borne performances take over Roker and Seaburn for the full weekend. From the world famous Red Arrows display team to historic metal like the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight this show has it all. There’s a whole load of family entertainment on the ground throughout too.
Just a short hop from the coast is Roker Park. This fantastic traditional park, with play areas, a lake and a miniature railway alongside the floral displays you’d expect to find. It’s ideal if you fancy a break from the sands.
The fun doesn’t stop when summer ends though; Sunderland Illuminations brightens up the seafront every September to November with dazzling displays. Roker Park is the epicentre of all things illuminated with stunning displays throughout the park.
It’s a perfect opportunity to wrap up warm and take in the crisp evening air… and the best possible excuse for a hot chocolate.
