Fireworks to close Sunderland Illuminations

A fireworks spectacular will light up the night sky along Sunderland seafront this Sunday (5 November) to help celebrate this year's Sunderland Illuminations and Festival of Light.

The free display will take place at 6pm, from Roker Pier and the best viewing points will be from Sunderland's seafront and Cliffe Park.

The ticket only Festival of Light display in Roker Park, and stretch of illuminations from Roker to Seaburn will remain switched on until 10pm for the last of the visitors to enjoy.

Admission to Roker Park on Sunday evening is by online ticket only with limited spaces available and no tickets on sale on the night.

Sunderland City Council Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “This year’s Sunderland Illuminations and Festival of Light has been one of our best ever, and Sunday’s fireworks display will help us celebrate this fantastic event which tens of thousands of people have visited our seafront to enjoy.

“Sunday evening promises to be very special, and I’d encourage anyone who wants to see the Festival of Light in Roker Park before it closes to quickly buy their tickets online as there will be great demand.

“Public reaction to the new attractions has been amazing and I hope anyone who hasn’t seen them yet will take their last chance this weekend.”

Cllr Kelly added: “Equally if not even more popular have been the attractions along the seafront and on Cliffe Park where everyone has joined in with the spirit of the occasion to have a great time.

“Again, I’d encourage people travelling to the event by car to make use of the Park and Ride from Keel Square in the city centre to the seafront which has proved really popular with visitors to this year’s event.”

Tickets to the Festival of Light can be bought online at where a site map and details of public transport and parking arrangements are also available.

Sponsors for this year’s event include Sunderland Empire Theatre (tickets), Northumbrian Water (‘Giant Tap’ display at Festival  of Light) and Minchella’s Fish & Chips (Lights display on main seafront traffic roundabout).
