Sunderland Football Club the pride and the passion are just like an opera

In 2011 a play called ‘Sunderland’ written by French author Clement Koch, which included references to Sunderland Football Club, wowed Parisian theatre goers. Now in 2014 a more local author David Almond will create the libretto for an opera all about the highs and sometime lows of Sunderland Football Club.

Music in the Minster has received funding from Arts Council England for the project and is working with the Foundation of Light and the Cultural Spring to bring the opera to the public in 2015.

As part of the project Black Cat Stories will also be launched to allow fans to create a digital version of their experience as supporters of Sunderland Football Club.

The music will be composed by the award winning Spanish composer Marcos Fernandez who, being from Barcelona, will understand the passions that football brings.

Sunderland born Alison Barton is the Artistic Director of the project and is someone who will no doubt remember the passion for football felt by the people of Sunderland when the club played in the FA Cup in 1973.

The opera will tell the story of Sunderland Football Club and will of course include the pride, passion and magic of the club’s historic victory; a second division club taking on the might of a then-rampant Leeds United in the 1973 FA Cup and winning one – nil.

When finished its run in 2015 will it go on to wow Parisian opera lovers as well? The French are known to be quite passionate about their football so maybe it just will.
