More than 200 people have already signed up for this year's Active Sunderland BIG Walk on Sunday 1 October, and there's still time to enter online. Entries on the day will also be taken.
The BIG Walk is the last of the popular Active Sunderland programme of participation events for 2017. This year new routes are being introduced which take in some of Sunderland’s most scenic, rural landscapes, covering distances of three, seven and 11 miles.
Duncan Gardner, a keen walker who will be working as a volunteer at this year’s event said: "This is a great community event and I’m looking forward to the new routes this year. There’s a real sense that you are walking off the beaten track and away from the crowds of an urban city environment - I think people will be surprised at what Sunderland has to offer."
With a choice of three different circular routes all starting and finishing in Herrington Country Park the walks will visit some of Sunderland’s least well known and beautiful countryside, including High Wood, an ancient woodland that rests on the banks of the River Wear.
The walks offer participants the chance to re-connect with the natural environment and catch a glimpse of some of Wearside’s most exciting and elusive wildlife, including brown hare, sparrowhawk, kingfisher and even otter!
The Active Sunderland BIG Walk will start at 10am on Sunday October 1 at Herrington Country Park. Entries are open online and your entry fee includes a technical t-shirt, the new Active Sunderland medal and goody bag.

Entries are being accepted on the day at event registration within Herrington Country Park from 9am.
