Hard work and dedication get the BP Portrait Award exhibition under way

The BP Portrait Awards from the National Portrait Gallery opens to the public this Saturday 4 October at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. We know people in the North East are going to thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to view fifty five of the most outstanding and innovative new portraits from around the world and we are very grateful to the National Portrait Gallery for this opportunity.

Of course the exhibition wouldn’t happen without the hard work of the back room staff.

Painting conservators and museum staff from both Sunderland Museum and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums took delivery of the fifty five portraits last week and have spent four long days taking the portraits out of storage, painstakingly checking them, arranging and hanging them to show them in the best light possible for the public to enjoy.

Plenty of hard work and dedication has been put in by Ana Flynn-Young (painting conservator), Sufea Mohamad Noor, Jenny Binns of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and Shauna Gregg of Sunderland Museums to get this wonderful exhibition up and running and for that we thank them.

The image shows Jenny Binns of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums inspecting 'Fergus' by the artist Paul Benney. To the left of Jenny is the portrait 'Mother # 1' by Yungsung Jang.
