Its stages have seen everything from the Bard to ballet, from social drama to comedy. Its extensive galleries have had some of the best contemporary art exhibited there. It also hosts workshops and craft fairs for the best creative crafts in the North East and has one of the best pubs and restaurants in Washington.

Perhaps Sunderland's most prominent landmark is Penshaw Monument. It was built in 1844 in honour of the first Earl of Durham, John George Lambton. Penshaw was modelled on Theseion, the Temple of Thesus in Athens.
