Active Sunderland BIG Summer Festival 2019

Sunderlands creative industry sector is one of the community partners supporting the Active Sunderland BIG Summer Festival 2019.

Tomorrow's event - it's £5 for all the activities - at Herrington Country Park (Wednesday 28 August 12-4pm) is a celebration of the BIG Active Sunderland Community Sports Festivals.

These festivals have been held every Wednesday afternoon in a different park and public space in the city over the summer.

Delivered by Sunderland City Council's award winning Active Sunderland events team, the main business sponsors of BIG Summer Festival are online and computer gaming designers/creators Coatsink based at Sunderland's Software Centre.

Tomorrow's Active Sunderland BIG Summer Festival in Herrington Country Park will not only host all the activities, games and sports enjoyed by families across the city, but also some new, exciting additions and attractions including:

* Hockey with Sunderland Broom Hockey Club
* Trampolining with Apollo Trampoline Club
* Dancing activities with Dance City
* Athletics with Washington Running Club
* Rugby with Houghton Rugby Club
* Arts and crafts with Art Venturers
* Beat the Superbug inflatable jousting
* Speed cage/giant inflatable dartboard with Foundation of Light.

One of the main attractions is the 100ft long inflatable assault courses and the 90ft ‘toxic drop’ challenge.

Or why not pull up a deckchair and watch a performance by Sunderland Rock Choir or a stunning display by NE Kite Flyers? Or meet Roary the mascot?

Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: "Thousands of children, young people and their families have taken part in this year's Active Sunderland BIG Community Sports Festivals, and this is a fabulous finale of what has truly been a summer of activities

"The success of these, and all events in our city, is down to the continued support of the community and I'd like to thank Coatsink for their sponsorship of the BIG Summer Festival which is an exciting new addition to the events calendar.

"We have some fantastic facilities, parks and sports clubs across our community, and our festivals and events programme provides people with a great introduction to what's available out there for them to enjoy."

CEO of Coatsink Tom Beardmore added: "Being part of Active Sunderland BIG Summer festival means so much to everyone at Coatsink.

"Gaming is an incredibly powerful social global community but sometimes you just need to look a little closer to home to find equally amazing communities.

"So let's put down our controllers, take off our headsets and celebrate being part of an amazing city thriving with a rich history and continually evolving communities."

Founded in 2009 Costsink's development studio has created platformer and puzzle games for console and PC, plus a range of games for Oculus Go and Oculus Quest.

The company has helped developed critically acclaimed Virtual Reality games such as Augmented Empire, been part of the Oculus Quest launch title line up with Shadow Point featuring Sir Patrick Stewart, and helped the online multiplayer solution for Boneloaf’s massively popular Gang Beasts.

Tickets to take part in the activities is £5 per person (for those taking part) and can be purchased either online at www.sunderland.gov.uk/bigsummerfestival or on the day.
