Airshow back with a roar

This year the unmistakeable roar of the RAF Typhoon Display Team  will once again ring out at the Sunderland International Airshow.

Starting with its traditional spectacular launch at Cliffe Park on the evening of Friday 21 July, this year’s event at Roker and Seaburn continues over the weekend of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July. The annual Sunderland City Council event attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to the city’s fantastic coastline.

Councillor John Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, said: "With its fantastic location, friendly atmosphere and display teams looking forward to coming here thanks to the warm welcome from the huge crowds we should all be proud of the Sunderland International Airshow.

"Our organising team continues to deliver a fantastic flying programme along with a huge range of activities including live music, stalls, attractions and of course fireworks. Our weekend truly has something for everyone."

Returning this year to display on all three days the RAF Typhoon Team will join a wide range of aircraft and display teams including the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team The Red Arrows to once again thrill the crowds. These aircraft will be joined on both the Saturday and Sunday by the RAF Falcons and RAF Tutor display team.

This year’s Typhoon display team, from 29(R) Squadron comprises a specialist from every aircraft trade along with support and management teams to assist both the pilot and the trades. Every member of the team has been hand-picked from what is already an elite cadre of skilled personnel at RAF Coningsby.

RAF Typhoon Display Pilot 2017, Flight Lieutenant Ryan Lawton said, “The RAF Typhoon Display Team is once again thrilled to be participating at the Sunderland International Airshow. Each year we are delighted to display over the spectacular coastline at Sunderland.

“As for me, this will be my first display at Sunderland and I’m really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere and welcome that the city is known for.”

Head of Events for Sunderland City Council, Victoria French said: "Each year our team works hard to organise and deliver an event that the city and the rest of the region can be proud of and it is great to hear that teams continue to look forward to coming here.”

Following the opening event, the airshow continues across the weekend between 10am and 6pm with a full programme of activity in the air and on the ground

All airshow displays are subject to weather and operational restrictions. Display timings for all airshow attractions will be confirmed nearer to the weekend.
