Christmas in Sunderland gets bigger and better

Spark! drummers take to Sunderland's Christmas streets

Christmas in Sunderland this year looks likely to be bigger and better than ever with many of its wonderful venues getting in the Christmas spirit and the entertainment spilling over into the streets.

Mowbray Park will be the scene of festive films including, yes of course ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, Santa’s reindeer, just here for a short visit before Santa calls them up, and a fantastic light display including Santa’s sleigh, penguins and polar bears.

Searchlights will display festive scenes on many of our classic buildings including The Minster, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and the Old Post Office.

Street entertainment includes stilt walkers such as the Jack’s of Frost, break dancing Santas and Spark! with its seven illuminated, choreographed drummers who will take to the streets to bring a celebratory festive feeling to Sunderland.

To get you around the city centre Santa has provided a train.

Christmas shoppers will be well served in the city centre where they’ll find plenty of quality independent and specialist boutiques, an indoor market, Christmas and farmers markets and The Bridges indoor shopping centre, home to over 90 high street stores.

And after all that entertainment and shopping it will be time to sit down and refuel in one of our many, catering for every taste, cafes, coffee shops and restaurants.

Perhaps Sunderland's most prominent landmark is Penshaw Monument. It was built in 1844 in honour of the first Earl of Durham, John George Lambton. Penshaw was modelled on Theseion, the Temple of Thesus in Athens.
