Doors open for Arts Centre celebration

Doors open for Arts Centre celebration

Arts Centre Washington is throwing open its new (automatic) doors for a fun filled ‘Open Day’ on Saturday 19 March.

The daylong celebration will marks the completion of work to improve facilities at the centre, following a £257,609 grant from Arts Council England and further investment from Sunderland City Council.

There will be activities to take part in, performances to watch and exhibitions to see or just wander around the studios inhabited by a number of local creative businesses.

Helen Green, Creative Director at Arts Centre Washington said

“It has been many, many years since Arts Centre Washington last opened its doors to celebrate all that it does in the community.  We now have the ideal opportunity as, whilst revealing recent improvements to various spaces such as our Gallery and Theatre, we are able to showcase the many activities delivered directly by the arts centre; by independent practitioners and by our studio artists and creative industries.  The huge variety of activities at the arts centre covers all art forms and caters for all members of our community such as arts and crafts for 4 year olds, junior and senior youth theatres, dance classes galore and our silver programme including two community choirs, watercolour classes and sequence dancing to name but a few.

At Arts Centre Washington we champion the arts as an alternative means of achieving physical and mental health and wellbeing, as well as giving people a cracking good time!   In a world where the arts are becoming increasingly side-lined in the school curriculum and local councils’ are faced with difficult funding choices, Arts Centre Washington continues to act as a beacon for accessible, affordable, local  cultural provision that is an essential part of the community it serves.”

Activities, workshops and performances for all ages include

  • Family arts and crafts
  • Circus skills workshop
  • Have a go in the ‘Drum Room’
  • Lay down a track in the recording studio
  • Watercolour and Oil Paint tasters
  • Singing workshops
  • Have your portrait painted by members of the Saturday Arts Club
  • Chill out with a Yoga taster session
  • Sing along with the community choir
  • Drama games and workshops
  • Kite making
  • Drop in dance workshops
  • Bunting making
  • Explore two newly opened exhibitions

Plus more to be announced

At 4pm the event will conclude with a showcase of performances by groups from Arts Centre Washington, in the newly refurbished theatre, including music, dance and drama.

Arts Centre Washington’s open day is on Saturday 19 March from 11am, all activities are free.  For more information visit www.artscentrewashington.co.uk or call 0191 561 3455
