Fishy facelift for much loved mural

A much-loved Roker seafront mural is getting a makeover.

The curving walls and roof of the Marine Walk Play Area were first painted to look like a whale in 2014. Now, five years later, the mural is about to get a facelift.

Artist Andy Morley, from Creative Ginger, who worked with local school children on the original design, is due to start work on the two week project on Monday.

And while his plans largely involve staying faithful to the original design, he also has a few ideas for updating it with some colourful additions to the much loved pirates and other characters that already adorn the walls.

Andy said: "To date, the Roker mural is still our favourite project and we are excited to be involved with refurbishment of the beloved mural. We have also some new funny characters to add - not to give much away, but you may see a mermaid added to the mural!"

The work is being funded by Sunderland City Council which commissioned the original artwork in 2014 as part of its £10m regeneration of the seafront.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, Councillor Rebecca Atkinson, said: "The mural went down a storm when we first commissioned it five years ago. Along with the new play equipment we installed at the time, it really brought the play area back to life.

"But located as it is right on the edge of the beach, it does bear the brunt of the weather down there and it's starting to look a bit faded, so now is the right time for a facelift. It’s really popular with families and it's also somewhere I go with my own son so it will be lovely to see it looking its best again."
