Fun-d running in Big 3k

SOFIA - Supporters of Fulwell Infants Academy

More and more people are signing up for this year's Active Sunderland BIG 3K Run - many to help raise money for charity.

Among these fun-d raising runners are members of the Supporters of Fulwell Infants Academy (SOFIA) community group, with 85 parents and children ready to take part in the event on Sunday 12 May in support of creating a sensory garden at the school.

The BIG 3K begins at 9am and will use the same start and finish line, on part of the same city centre closed road course, as that of the Siglion Sunderland City 10K and Half Marathon taking place later that morning.

The Active Sunderland BIG 3K Run and weekend programme of events provides an opportunity for runners of all ages and abilities including children aged five years and over, to take part in a large scale running event.

One of the SOFIA fundraising parents is Lauren Flaxen who said: "It's great that so many of our famiIies and children are taking part in this year’s BIG 3K run.

"Fundraising to help create a sensory garden in the grounds of Fulwell Infants Academy is added incentive to take part in the BIG 3K, and children and parents alike have already had great fun training to get ready.

“We’re all really looking forward to the run, and hope other schools and charity fundraisers will join us on what promises to be a fantastic occasion for everyone in the city.”

Each runner / participant will receive an event t-shirt, medal and goody bag with their entry and must be aged over five with everyone under eight needing to run with an adult. To sign up Click here and register before the deadline of Sunday 5 May.

The Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council, Patrick Melia said: "Good luck to all of the children and families from Fulwell Infants Academy running to help raise money for the school’s sensory garden, and to all those taking part on behalf of charities and community projects across the city and across the region.

"The aim of the Active Sunderland BIG events is to get more people involved in sport and leisure activities, and increasing numbers are using the fundraising possibilities as additional motivation.

"We have designed the events programme to provide opportunities for everyone to get involved and get active, whatever their age and abilities, so please find something to suit you, your family and friends and join us."
