A happy and active summer

Barnes Park provides the venue for the first in the summer programme of the Active Sunderland BIG Community Sports Festivals.

The annual programme provides children, young people and their families with affordable and easy access to a huge range of outdoor activities and sports.

Trained staff and volunteers from local sports clubs and community groups are on hand to provide the encouragement, expertise and equipment needed to take part.             

The Wednesday afternoon sessions 12-3pm are hosted in a different park or public green space every week (24 July to 21 August)  to make sure every community across the city has the chance to take part and get involved.

Following the Barnes Park event on 24 July venues and dates are;  Mowbray Park (31 July), Princess Anne Park (7 Aug), Hetton Lyons Country Park (14 Aug)  and Seaburn beach and promenade (21 Aug) the next to stage the event.

Activities include
- Hula hoops
- Tug of war
- Giant feet hockey
- Basketball & Netball Targets
- Swing Ball
- Mini golf
- Giant Jenga
- Giant noughts and crosses
- Balance Games
- Football
- Target games
- any many more ............

Entry is only £2 per person with discount available if booked in advance on-line with entry to five community sports festivals for the price of four.       
 
Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: "It's a long summer for families with children, and the Active Sunderland BIG Community Sports Festivals provide a great opportunity for people to get involved in a fantastic range of activities designed to suit all ages, aptitudes and abilities.

“There's literally something for everybody and we want people to come along and enjoy themselves.

"It's fun and a great chance to try out different sport, games and ways of being active."
