Latest 20mph zones completed

More 20MPH zones have gone ‘live’ across Sunderland.

Sunderland City Council has introduced the zones in residential areas in Concord and Biddick after they were identified as areas where speeding was a concern.

This follows another new 20mph zone that was introduced outside of Rickleton Primary school last month, taking the total number of 20mph zones completed in Sunderland over the last 12 months to 17.

Cllr Amy Wilson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Sunderland City Council said: "The 20mph traffic scheme is intended to improve road safety and reduce both the number and severity of injuries.

"Reducing speeds not only make an area a more attractive place to live but also help protect vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly and those who have hearing and visual impairments."

The new 20mph zones have gateway signs which signal the start and end points of the zones with 20mph roundels on the ground throughout.

Cllr Wilson said: "Research shows that slower traffic speeds helps reduce the risk of collisions and of any casualties and injuries, and we have seen this in some of our existing 20mph zones across the city."

Having 20mph speed zones also provides health benefits by helping to increase walking or cycling, and benefits the community.
