One step beyond

There's plenty of opportunity for people to get involved in National Walking Month this year in Sunderland.

Throughout May - and beyond - there are events and activities to suit all ages and aptitudes from a leisurely stroll with the family to a brisk 'power' walk to boost the number of daily steps on a fitness regime.

Sunderland City Council's 'Go Smarter to Work' sustainable transport/travel campaign and Active Sunderland events team are combining expertise and resources, to put on a programme of free walking initiatives throughout the month including:

Sunderland City Council Pedometer Challenge from 27-31 May. Teams of five compete to see who can walk the furthest. Contact for further details

Sunderland City Council Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, Fiona Brown said: “We try to provide people with all the opportunity and encouragement that we can to help them get involved in sport and physical activities, and this national walking initiative does just that.

“There’s also a full programme of events and activities throughout the year across the city to get involved with and enjoy.”

For those with a taste for walking and seeking a challenge after National Walking Month, there's also the Active Sunderland BIG Walk on Sunday 30 June.

The walk starts and finishes at Herrington Country Park taking in some of Sunderland’s most beautiful countryside along the banks of the River Wear.

The event is suitable for all ages and abilities, with three routes to choose from including a three -mile scavenger trail for families and new walkers, and more challenging seven and eleven mile options through the beautiful Sunderland countryside
