Stay safe near open water this half term

River Wear

A Sunderland councillor is calling on people to stay safe near open water this half term holiday.

With the weather much improved on last week's snow and ice, Councillor Linda Williams, Cabinet Member for Vibrant City, is urging anyone planning to walk along the riverside or near one of the city's ponds or lakes to extra care.

She said, "While we should all be staying at home in line with government guidance, we know that many children and families may be heading to their local riverside, ponds and lakes for their daily exercise during half term, particularly when many of the usual attractions are closed due to lockdown.

"But after the heavy rain, snow and ice of the last couple of weeks many of our river banks are muddy and slippery and the water is still icy cold so we'd ask everyone to take extra care and stay away from the water's edge. It's so easy to lose your footing and slip or stumble into the water. But cold water shock can set in very quickly and can be fatal.

"We'd also ask people who live at the coast and take their daily exercise there to be careful too, stay away from cliff edges and if you are walking along the beach be careful that you don't get caught out by the tide coming in.

"While we're lucky enough to have some of the best beaches in the country and some very attractive river banks, we really want everyone to stay safe this half term too."
