Nissan 30 Years Sunderland Exhibition

Nissan 30 Years Sunderland Exhibition
Monday, August 22, 2016 to Monday, January 2, 2017

The Nissan 30 Years Sunderland Exhibition, supported by MAKE it Sunderland charts the history of the last three decades and showcases key moments in the plant’s history.

Beginning in 1984 when the company first announced it had chosen Sunderland as its UK location, and varying models of cars that have been produced at the plant over the last 30 years, including the Nissan Bluebird and Primera through to today’s world bestselling 100 per cent electric vehicle the Nissan LEAF.  The exhibition also includes the first Nissan premium vehicle to be built in Europe and the newest car brand to be launched in the UK in 23 years, the Infiniti Q30 compact luxury car.

In 1986 ‘JOB 1’ rolled off the production line at the new Nissan plant in Sunderland.  That same Nissan Bluebird is still on display in Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens today.  What a legacy that car bequeaths, it is hard to believe how small scale production was in those early labour intensive years, when about 95 cars a day were being produced and 430 staff were employed at the plant.

The plant is now heralded as the biggest UK automotive car plant of all time and one of the most productive in Europe, employing almost 7,000 people, supporting a further 40,000 jobs in the UK and producing more than 500,000 cars a year.  One in every three cars in the UK is a Nissan.
