Free sports activities for all the family

Free sports activities for all the family

To celebrate this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio, Active Sunderland delivered a series of six hugely successful community sports festivals at various locations throughout the city during the school summer holiday period.

Approximately 4000 people attended the festivals and to continue this hugely successful initiative Active Sunderland will be staging the first ever indoor community sports festival on the 24th and 25th October 2016 at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland, from 12noon to 4.00pm each day.

Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “The Active Sunderland area festivals are a great way to have a go and take part in many different sports free of charge.  I would encourage everyone to come along and see just how many opportunities there are in the city for people of all ages to get active”

Councillor Kelly added: “And don’t forget, following the sports festival why not extend your visit to the seafront and take in the fantastic Sunderland Illuminations programme”.

Through the community sports festivals and working with partners and community sports clubs, Active Sunderland are striving to increase the number of people being active across the city. At the festivals everyone is encouraged to take part, free of charge, in a wide variety of sports and activities taster sessions.

One of the clubs who have regularly supported the sports festivals is Apollo trampoline club. Bill Leach, head coach at the club said: “Apollo Trampoline Club is delighted to support Active Sunderland and it has been fantastic for us attending a number of the community sports festivals over the summer”.

He added: “It is a fantastic opportunity for us at the club not only to showcase our sport but also to encourage residents to come along, have a go at something new and perhaps continue on after the event with a new sport or activity”.

All of the activities are free and everyone, of all ages and abilities, is encouraged to come along and try a new activity or sport. Sports and activities at the festivals will typically include football, rugby, table tennis, tennis, hockey, martial arts, netball, cricket, mini golf, volleyball, trampolining, traditional sports day games and many more family activities.

Further details will be released soon so please check the Active Sunderland Facebook page to keep up to date with the activity programme or go to for further information.
