Discover Series returns for a new year at Sunderland University

Respected figures from the North East and UK will once again descend on the University of Sunderland for this year’s free to attend Discover Series lectures.

The talks will see household names from fields such as writing, entertainment, art, sport and broadcasting discuss their careers and industries. The lectures run throughout the academic year and aim to inform and entertain, as well as generate debate.

The series will open with guest speaker Bryan Talbot who is an Honorary Graduate of the University of Sunderland. Bryan is a renowned graphic novel artist and writer most famous for The Adventures of Luthur Arkwright, Alice in Sunderland, and more recently, the Grandville series.

He will be debating industry trends, and his work with comic giants such as Judge Dredd and also Batman, which he worked on for the iconic DC Comics in the USA. The talk will take place at 6.30pm Wednesday October 8 in the Murray Library Lecture Theatre, City Campus, and will be followed by a book signing. 

Bryan said: “It's always good to be able to do something for the University which gave me my honorary degree in the arts. I hope that they'll find it educational and entertaining.”

Future speakers include Malcolm Gerrie, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Denise Robertson and the University’s Chancellor Steve Cram, with more to be announced in the near future.

Malcolm Gerrie is a recognised name in the music entertainment industry having worked on iconic North East show The Tube, and been the creative drive behind the Brit Awards for eight years. He also worked on both the Band Aid and Live 8 projects.

Baroness Tanni  Gery-Thompson competed at five Paralympic Games, winning 11 gold medals and claiming multiple world records. Now living in the North East she is a director of UK Athletics and a member of the House of Lords.

Denise Robertson MBE was born in County Durham and is a writer and broadcaster famous for her work as an agony aunt on television and in magazines. She was awarded an MBE in 2006 for her services to broadcasting and charity.

Steve Cram MBE is a former Olympic medallist and world champion middle-distance runner who now coaches and commentates for the BBC. He became Chancellor of the University in 2008 and has recently joined the British Endurance Athletics Programme where he will advise and mentor the nation’s athletes ahead of Rio 2016.
