Sunderland's good central location enables visitors to travel around the region hassle free; in 30 minutes you can visit the historic Durham City and its magnificent cathedral and castle, or see the cultural delights of The Sage Gateshead and acclaimed art exhibitions at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.

A short drive away is Beamish Open Air Museum, one of the UK's most popular attractions. This open air museum features recreations of a 19th and early 20th century farm, colliery and village, including trams and steam engines.

Sunderland shares its coast with both South Tyneside and Durham's Heritage Coast. You can see more of the stunning coastal wildlife, seabirds and flora and fauna found on our northern coast.

Did you know?

Perhaps Sunderland's most prominent landmark is Penshaw Monument. It was built in 1844 in honour of the first Earl of Durham, John George Lambton. Penshaw was modelled on Theseion, the Temple of Thesus in Athens.
